Q & A

Q.

What causes sound to seem muffled?

A.

The cause of muffled sound is not limited to the speaker itself.
In practice, it often happens due to a combination of factors: installation method, how the door interior resonates, audio adjustments, and the vehicle-side effects.

Common causes include the following:

  • High frequencies are not coming through well

    • When sound separation becomes poor, the overall impression tends to feel “mushy.”
  • Sound is becoming unclear inside the door

    • Since speakers are often mounted in the door, the sound changes depending on the mounting area and the surrounding condition.
    • If the speaker is not mounted firmly, it may be difficult for the sound to project forward.
  • Low frequencies are getting too “boomy”

    • If there’s too much bass, vocals and instrument contours can sound blurred.
  • The audio settings do not match the vehicle

    • Depending on the equalizer and sound-field adjustment settings, the sound may seem muffled.
    • There are cases where it becomes much easier to listen to with adjustments alone.
  • Vehicle-side functions are affecting the sound

    • Depending on the model, certain factory functions that correct sound can actually lead to a sense of discomfort.
    • Especially on Toyota/Lexus models, it may be worth checking the effects of ANC or ASC.

These two have slightly different roles:

  • ANC

    • A function intended to cancel out interior noise.
    • After replacing the audio, it can lead to a “buzzz” discomfort or a sense of sound being canceled.
  • ASC

    • A function that outputs “driving performance sound effects” from the speakers.
    • Since added effects—such as engine-sound-like audio—are included, it may bother you if you prioritize natural music playback.

At LOGON, when this happens, we don’t decide on a product right away. Instead, we first organize and review where the sound is getting unclear/muddy.

  • The condition of the speaker itself
  • The installation condition
  • How sound resonates around the door
  • The content of the audio adjustments
  • The influence of vehicle-side functions

By checking in this order, the likely cause becomes easier to identify.
In real cases, it’s not only speaker replacement; re-evaluating the installation, door-side work/construction, and redoing the tuning/adjustments can significantly change how it sounds.

On the other hand, if you simply decide “it’s muffled, so replace the speaker,” the improvement may not be as much as you expected.
That’s why it’s important to choose countermeasures that match the cause.

If you feel something off with the current sound, you don’t need to force yourself to change wiring or settings too much on your own.
At LOGON, we help you sort things out according to the vehicle model and your current system—whether it can likely be improved through adjustments, whether the installation needs to be reconsidered, or whether a replacement would be better.

Similarly, there are many inquiries such as “the sound is somewhat heavy,” “the vocals don’t come forward,” or “it’s harder to listen than before.”
Even just separating the symptoms can make the direction much clearer, so if something feels off, it’s totally fine to consult with us as a starting point.
