【Quarter Deadening Damping Absorber｜Installation to Reduce Road Noise Transmitted Inside the Cabin】

If you’re bothered by the “whoosh” type road noise during driving or vibrations transmitted from around the tires, deadening the quarter panel area can be effective in some cases.

Road noise isn’t simply the sound outside the car entering the cabin as-is. Instead, vibrations generated by the tires and the road are transmitted to the body, and then panel sections and cavity areas resonate—so the noise is heard in the cabin as an unpleasant sound.

Depending on the vehicle model, the quarter area forms a large cavity and is also connected to the tire housing. As a result, driving vibrations and noise can be transmitted more easily, sometimes causing sound to resonate inside the cabin.

That’s why, at our shop, we use the “quiet” quarter deadening damping absorber to suppress vibration in the quarter panels, and we also apply an acoustic absorber material to the cavity areas. By properly adding acoustic absorber material—also used in speaker woofer boxes, for example—we reduce sound reverberation within the cavity and help make the noise transmitted into the cabin feel more settled.

After installation, rather than completely eliminating road noise itself, we aim to soften the “whoosh” sound and low-frequency vibrations coming from around the tires, so the cabin feels a little quieter. You may find that music and conversations become easier to hear, or that fatigue from long drives changes.

However, how effective it is—and the range of installation needed—varies depending on the vehicle model, tires, and the condition inside the cabin. In some cases, deadening only the quarter area is sufficient, while in others it may be better to also check other areas such as the tire housing and around the luggage compartment.
